I like that a reader can approach it many ways: thematically, geographically, or in plot or style or character. When I read your comment about mother/daughter relationships in The Joy Luck Club, and then saw the Double Indemnity cover, I thought, If you want to find a wild mother/daughter story... And then there was Mildred Pierce, just waiting for me to scroll down and discover! Cain's an interesting writer, more intrigued by relationships and morality than some of his crime writing counterparts, I feel.
