Last year about this time, I stumbled upon the announcement of R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VII. That was the first year that I participated in this fun event that started seven years ago.
This event is hosted by Carl of Stainless Steel Droppings. The event starts in September and goes through October and celebrates "all things ghastly and ghostly" as we move into Fall.
A description of the event:
The purpose of R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VIII is to enjoy books and movies/television that could be classified (by you) as:
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above.
There are two simple goals for R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VIIISee this post for ways that you can participate. In addition to books, movies, and television, you can post about short stories or join in a group read. There is a R.I.P. Review Site where participants may post links to any book or screen posts related to this event.
1. Have fun reading.
2. Share that fun with others.
I am committing to only one peril this year... Peril the First. Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature.
I will most certainly read more than four mysterious books, and I may view (and review?) a movie or two.
These are the mystery / suspense novels I definitely plan to read in the next two months:
Seeking Whom He May Devour by Fred Vargas (just finished this one)
A White Arrest by Ken Bruen
The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino
The Yard by Alex Grecian
Vengeance by Michael Dibdin
Those are all police procedurals... or at least focus on a policeman protagonist. I am on a police procedural binge right now.These books are some of the books that I considered reading last time and it would be nice to read one or two of them this time:

Oh, this sounds like a great challenge, Tracy. I give you so much credit for doing these. I think you're gonna love Raven Black if you read it. Oh, and Bones and Silence too.

Carol, My husband liked Devotion of Suspect X a lot and has been wanting me to read it. Both of those you mentioned are his books, but he has not read The Yard yet.
Prashant, I have not read but one of Deaver's books, so I am looking forward to reading more of them. Hope I get to them soon.

Sounds like great fun - yesterday I went to an open air screening of the classic 1957 horror movie, NIGHT OF THE DEMON, from the MR James story 'Casting the Runes' and certainly put me in a Gothic frame of mind - look forward to seeing what you come up with TracyK!
Sergio, I feel like I should pick more gothic types of books or even something in the area of Horror. Maybe something on my shelves will fit those areas more...
I have considered reading The Yard a few times but it hasn't happened yet...

Thanks, Carl. This challenge is not that much of a stretch for me, but if I hadn't stumbled upon it, I would never have found your sci fi and fantasy challenges. Now, those are a real stretch for me and have broadened my horizons.

Well, for this challenge, it really is not hard to complete because I will read that number of mystery related books anyway. It is just fun to participate and see what others are reading. A lot of participants read the more horrific and creepy books, and maybe I will see one I can add to my list ... another year.
But believe me, next year, very few challenges. I am not going to limit my reading that way.
I'll be interested to see how you get on if you read Rozan. I've not yet tried her.....oh and Ken Bruen.
Col, I just finished all three books in The White Trilogy. I could not stop with The White Arrest. Loved them all and together they are perfect. I have read all the Rozan books up to Ghost Hero and like her books very much. The earlier ones were better, but still all worth reading.
One of my favourite films, probably all-time fave horror film - you are lucky Sergio! Every time I see it, my partner and I get into a little rite of passing the runes to each other...
