The TBR Triple Dog Dare in 2016

James at James Reads Books says he is bringing back The TBR Dare one last time.

From James' description:
For the first three months of 2016 read only the books that were already in your TBR stack as of midnight December 31, 2015.
As always, you can include books you’ve ordered but not received yet as well as books you have already placed on reserve at your local library.  You can also make exceptions for certain books that will be published early next year along with book club choices and ARCS as needed.  The TBR Dare has always been about having fun, so make whatever changes to the “rules” you need to to keep it fun.
If you just want to take The TBR Dare for a month, that’s fine, too.  The TBR Triple Dog Dare will run from January 1, 2015 to April 1, 2005.  Technically, it’s not a shopping ban so you can still buy books–you just can’t read them until April 1.

If you are interested in signing up or just want to read more of the rules, check out THIS LINK.

I had actually sworn off challenges for 2016 (or at least decided to cut back a lot) but as James points out, it is not a challenge, it is a DARE.

To make the event suit my needs, these are my rules:

  • If I need to buy a book to fit the Crimes of the Century meme at Past Offences, or re-read a book I have already read, I will do that. So far, all the books I have read have been from my books.
  • I will allow myself to pick books from my husband's shelves if I have been planning to read them for years. There are plenty of those. Ditto for my son's books. I have some books from each of them sitting on my shelves waiting to be read.

Mainly my aim in January, February, and March will be to read my books and make a dent in the ones that have been hanging around the longest. But my overall goal in 2016 will be to read what I want to read and not try to fit my reading to a challenge. So if I bought a book on December 20th, 2015 and it calls to me, that is the book I will read.

One other reason I chose to participate in The TBR Triple Dog Dare in 2016 is because I plan to pair it with a personal challenge to abstain from buying any books in the first three months of 2016. Note that this is NOT a goal of The TBR Triple Dog Dare, but an additional choice I am making. It would be great if I could extend that goal past March 2016, but that is unrealistic. I just hope to make my book buying decisions more conscious in 2016 and into the future.

I must give credit for inspiration to attempt these goals to two bloggers: Christine at A Reading Life and Moira at Clothes in Books.

I've been trying to read my TBR and not order any books, instead if I see a book I think I have to have I've been putting it on my Amazon Wish List and it can rest there a while and then I can decide if I really want it.

A list is a good idea, M n' J, which I already have sort of, but needs to be refined. I think the real benefit of a buying embargo, for whatever length of time, is to force me to wait and think about a book, and prioritize, and not to buy on impulse.

Sounds like a very sensible challenge - I do need to make a dent in that TBR (sic) - thanks Tracy!

Tracy, at this point I just need to sit down and read my books and ebooks, and I think I'm slowly getting there. Good luck to you on this challenge.

I wish you well with the challenge, Tracy. And I appreciate the reminder that I really ought to tackle my own TBR...

I've been trying to go through my TBR stack and not order anything or visit the library until 2016. Next year, I'm attempting the U.S. State challenge - read a book from each of the states.
Good luck with making a dent!

Good luck - no rash challenges from me I'm afraid!

I usually do fairly well reading from my TBR books, Sergio, but I really need to stop adding to the piles.

Thanks, Prashant, I need to focus on my ebooks also, the only ebooks I generally read are netgalley books, and I have lot on my Kindle besides those.

Thank you, Margot, I really have to get the TBR piles situation under control.

Ann, I started a US State challenge a few years ago, but I was doing it gradually and don't know where I stand now. Still have a lot of missing states.

Col, Paring down the TBR is much easier than not adding to it. So easy to order online.

TracyK: I have decided not to take such a dare or challenge as I want to be able to buy books when I want to make a purchase. I bought less in 2015 but ended up reading less so the TBR did not diminish. Interesting books for review keep coming from publishers as well. I do not have a solution and try not to worry too much about the TBR boxes. There are bigger issues in my life.

Too many books is definitely a small issue in my life, Bill, and not one to worry about too much. But I have been planning for this for months, and I am looking forward to it.

Good for you! Thanks for the shoutout - I wish I could say it cured me of buying books, but it didn't. But, it was a great thing to do, and I and my shelves are much the better for it. Good luck.

Thanks, Moira. My overall, long-term goal is to buy less books outside of the annual book sale (because I can never give up that event) and to buy less on impulse.

Welcome and thanks for giving us a plug here. I've posted a link on the sign-up page.

Thanks, James. I do love this concentrated period of reading only from the TBR books and it does make me look at my reading habits.
