The 74th Annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show

The 74th annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show started Friday, March 15. We visited Saturday morning. I believe this was the third time we attended in all our years in Santa Barbara, and it has been several years since our last visit.  The show is extremely popular and there were crowds of people to contend with. My husband and I and our son all took pictures and here are a few of my favorites.

From the SB Orchid Show site:
Nestled on a narrow plain between the rugged Santa Ynez Mountains on the north and the calm, blue seas of the Pacific Ocean on the south, Santa Barbara enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate with temperate nights and soft, ocean breezes.
From this splendid setting has sprung an orchid industry that now produces more orchids than any other region in the country. Many of the growers introduce their finest blooms at the Santa Barbara International Show before sending them out as potted plants, cut-flower sprays and individual corsages to orchid enthusiasts throughout the world.

Tracy, wonderful photographs, such beautiful plants! I have been to Fuchsia shows, Iris shows, Begonia shows and Lily shows but never an Orchid one. How neat that you went and enjoyed this one. SB would seem to be an excellent climate for them. Thanks so much for sharing.

Those are gorgeous 'photos, Tracy! Thanks for sharing what must have been a lovely show. I'm glad for you that you took the time to see it. Erm...you didn't by chance see a PI (weighs about a seventh of a ton) and his assistant there, did you?? ;-)

Yes, Rick, Santa Barbara is perfect for some orchids outdoors. We have some orchids in pots (cymbidiums) in our back area and I hope to get more this spring. It was a lovely show but always crowded.

I would love to go to a Fuchsia show. That is one of my favorite plants and also does well outside here in the warmer months.

Thank you, Kay. We also have orchid growers around here that are open to the public, and we enjoy visiting them and seeing what's available.

That is funny, Margot. I should have been looking for Nero Wolfe. They should at least have an honorary display for him.

My husband loves orchids above all flowers. We always had one in the house...must get to a store and buy one.

I have never had indoor orchids, Patti, but I plan to look into which ones will do well and how to care for them.

The last thing I was expecting to see when I pulled up your page! But how beautiful, great photos. And a change from crime, murder and betrayal...

We haven't been taking photo excursions so much lately, Moira, and are missing it. The orchids were a great subject. The indoor lighting was sometimes an issue.
