A Brief Hiatus

I will be away from the blog for a while.

My mother passed away yesterday. It was not unexpected, but still quite a shock.  She was a beautiful person, caring selflessly for my father 24 hours a day during the last years of his life when he suffered from dementia.

A picture of my mother and father, visiting us in Santa Barbara. I am guessing that Daddy was in his early 60s, Mother in her late 50s.

  9. I'm so sorry, Tracy. No matter how 'expected' it is it's always a shock. I think somewhere deep inside us we think our parents will never be gone from us. It's a difficult thing. Hugs and prayers.

  10. Yesterday's comment disappeared so here I am again. This was a horrible loss for me and I think of my mother every day five years later. You will carry her as a part of you though and that is some consolation.

  14. My condolences, Tracy. Such a silent thoughtful time that follows when the last parent leaves us. They look like lovely and happy people. Cherish the memories and tell their stories often and they'll live on.

  18. I'm so sorry to hear this. It was the recent death of my own mother that prompted me to start rereading Delano Ames in her memory, which is how I found this blog. Her death was also far from unexpected, so I know that doesn't always make a difference to grief.

  20. Tracy: I was away on the weekend. Sorry I have not commented sooner.

When I hear of the loss of a parent I think of my parents gone - my mother in 1981 and my father in 1988. Memories remain strong of their deaths.

My memories of them alive are stronger. From the loving words you wrote I am sure you have a lifetime of good memories of your mother.

I wish you and your family well as you grieve your loss.

I have found the words of Sullivan Ballou, a Union soldier, written to his wife, Sarah, just before the first battle of Bull Run in the Civil War, a battle in which he died, to be of some comfort to me when mourning the loss of a family member. I first heard the letter when it was read on the PBS series, The Civil War. The letter ends:

"But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . ."

    1. Bill, I don't know you, but what you wrote is so beautiful. I'll be printing the quote from Sullivan Ballou out and putting it up where I can read it everyday. Thank you.
