Mysteries in October and Pick of the Month

I cannot believe that October is nearly over and Halloween is here (although by the time you read this it will probably be past). There are only two more months in the year. I like the cooler months better (although it can be very hot here in October and even into November). So the end of the year is a favorite time of year. I was very happy with my reading this month. Everything I read was crime fiction.

Two of the books I read this month were vintage mysteries published in the year 1932. Rich at Past Offenses gathered links to reviews of books published in that year HERE.

I participated in the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril IX event, hosted by Carl of Stainless Steel Droppings during September and October. That event celebrates reading books of mystery and suspense and viewing films (or TV) in the same area. None of my reading this month was particularly spooky or scary, but The Coroner's Lunch by Colin Cotterill did have elements of the supernatural.

These are the books I read in October:

Garden of Beasts by Jeffery Deaver
The Saint vs. Scotland Yard by Leslie Charteris
Keeper of the Keys by Earl Derr Biggers
Death is a Lonely Business by Ray Bradbury
Siren of the Waters by Michael Genelin
The German Agent by J. Sydney Jones
The Coroner's Lunch by Colin Cotterill

The Crime Fiction Pick of the Month meme is hosted at Mysteries in Paradise. You can go HERE to see more summary posts for the month and choices for favorite crime fiction reads.

This month, I don't know that I can narrow it down to one novel as my favorite this month. I hope to read more books by all of these authors, and each book had its high points. If I was forced to choose, I would make it a tie between Keeper of the Keys by Biggers and Death is a Lonely Business by Bradbury.

Tracy, I'd pick Ray Bradbury as my book of the month but then that's the only book I have read from all seven. I have been partial to his writing.

Prashant, I was glad it was such a good month of reading, and a lot of variety too. I do want to read more Bradbury. I have a book of his short stories. Maybe I will read some of those.

Tracy - You have some interesting reads here. I think Bradbury had an incredible amount of talent; I really do. I find it hard to separate my feelings about his talent from my feelings about him as a person (long story), but he did indeed write some fabulous stories.

It was a good month, Margot. I usually try to separate my feelings about a person from their art, but it doesn't always work. I know little about Bradbury, but my husband and I did attend a lecture he gave (many, many, many years ago) and he and an audience member argued and it was unpleasant. That is about all I remember from so many years ago.

Great choice TracyK - and I can't believe that I didn't get to participate in the 1932 challenge - hopefully I can manage the next one - do we have a year yet?

thanks, Sergio. I was just wondering about the year for November. I checked and no word yet.

I haven't read any of these books, though they all sound interesting.... Like you I'm waiting to see what month Rich will choose next.

Moira, I am just now working on a review for Siren of the Waters. AND I just finished reading Enigma by Robert Harris and am now looking forward to seeing the movie again. We had discussed that a bit at your blog, a while back.

And I just saw in the comments of the 1932 books post that John picked 1946. I hope that is it, because I recently got a book for that year that I was wanting to read.

I have ordered the Bradbury book as I want to re-read it some day. I got a book voucher for my birthday - so it had to be spent on something! Deaver, Biggers and Cotterill sit on the pile already.
Switching to the weather, it's been quite mild here at the minute, though wet. I'm not a big fan of the colder months and could happily hibernate until March. Wake me up Christmas day and feed me!

Happy belated birthday, Col. Mine is coming up but I have already spent my birthday money... on books of course. We are going to a couple of used book stores in the area on my birthday weekend.

Re weather, our late summer has been hotter this year, and it looks like November and December may be perfect. Not too warm, not too cold. We did just have some heavy rain this weekend, but not enough to help the drought.

I love that film Engima, I would like to see it again.
1946 doesn't suggest anything straightaway - I'll have to start digging around...

We nearly re-watched it last night, it has been years. But I wanted to give it a little space after reading the book because I pick too much at a movie if I have read the book recently. I prefer to enjoy the movie for itself.
