A New Cat in Our Life: Rosie

We found a new cat about a week and a half ago. Meet Rosie!

This is my husband's description of our cat search:
On Saturday we went first to the Humane Society and then to County Animal Services.

The latter had a large number of cats for adoption and a large number of people looking at them.

We kept coming back to look at a young (1.5 years) mostly-white number with calico splotches and tabby head/tail and it was her that we went home with.

Her name is Rosie and she has the largest ears I've seen on a small cat.

She is fairly subdued but affectionate and chatty. Interestingly, she does not bite. At all.

She's a keeper.
Some notes of interest. At least to me.

On the biting, our first cat, Bink, did bite. Not ferociously or meanly. But if she did not like how you touched her, watch out.

Rosie doesn't bite, but she has attacked our feet while we were sleeping...or at least trying to sleep. And she has this whirling dervish behavior (on the bed, at night) I have never seen before.

I think she is settling in. We have never had a cat this young before. It feels like having a new baby in the house, and I am getting no sleep. I hope that will change.

She's lovely Tracy. Sounds like she'll be a great addition to the family.

TracyK: Beautiful photo. Cats are wonderful in photos. I wonder if it is because they do not care what humans are doing.

Tracy - What great news! And Rosie is such a beautiful cat! I'm so glad you are all taking to each other. :-)

Tracy, I think the subdued element may be part of a settling in and re-adjustment. We are a dog family, and when my son got his dog from a rescue centre, the dog was lethargic and for want of a better word depressed. Now he's madder than a box of frogs. So what out! Keep us all posted!

Peggy, I am sure she will be a lovely addition once we get used to a cat running our lives again.

Bill, cats are great to photograph, if they will stay where you want them. And you are probably right about why they photograph so well.

Margot, she definitely is ready to be petted and loved, and we are glad to have her.

Col, we used to be a dog family, then transitioned to cats. Over the years my husband and I have been married, we have had two dogs and one cat prior to Rosie, all relatively long-lived. We hope Rosie lasts that long too. Right now, Rosie vacillates between sleeping and solemn, and very excited, with the quieter mode lasting longer. We are having just as much an adjustment as she is.

Not much a of a cat fan primarily because I'm allergic. But that's one irresistible face, ain't it? Enjoy the new member of your family! I don't envy you the sleepless nights though.

Thank you, John. Yes, I was not anticipating sleepless nights. But I will survive. My husband is allergic to long-haired cats, but can get along with short hairs.

I love cats, am totally frustrated that I became allergic to them in my 20s or else, I'd have as many as my apartment could keep.

Rosie is beautiful, and it sounds like she has a great temperament.

But on those night raids, that's just how many young cats are. Cats are nocturnal beings. Years ago, my cats would wait outside my bedroom door (my then-partner didn't wants them in the bedroom at night), and as soon as the door opened, they'd play leap frog over my legs.

A relative has young cats and doesn't let them in the bedroom at night as they treat her like a prize that they're fighting over, and as a mountain, which they're trying to climb on all night. Needless to say, they're banished from the bedroom at night; that is, until they're older and more "sedate."

That's their nature though when they're young, to play all night. Maybe you should get another cat to keep her company.

Awww, what a sweetie! So happy to know that things are working out thus far, except on the sleep front. That will come in time, no doubt. She is a beauty.

Tracy, that's a very cute cat. They're photogenic, aren't they? I like cats though we adopted a stray dog two years ago. She was one of seven pups norn in our compound. We managed to find good homes for the other six which was a miracle considering even pedigreed dogs are up for grabs in Mumbai.

Kathy, thanks for the thoughtful comments. Glad to know our cat is not that unusual. I guess we had an older, sedate cat for so long, we forgot about the nocturnal behavior.

I would love to have one more cat, if I thought they would both get along.

Carl, she is a sweetie and we are getting attached to her very fast.

Prashant, yes, cats are photogenic. That is great that you adopted a stray dog and found a home for the others.

Such a lovely cat. Congratulations!

Thank you, Sarah. She is a sweetie, except for not letting me sleep.
