Another Challenge to Deal with the TBR Pile

For several years, a different kind of TBR challenge has been hosted at Ready When You Are, C.B. This year the TBR Triple Dog Dare will be possibly the last one.  I thought this one was a little extreme for me, but really it fits perfectly. It is flexible and it is meant to be fun. You can sign up here.

The rules:
Read only books in your TBR pile or on your library reserve list as of January 1, 2014 for the entire months of January, February and March.  The TBR Triple Dog Dare will end on April 1, 2014.
And the exceptions:
You are allowed to make any scheduled exceptions you need to for book clubs, or books you have on order, books scheduled to be published during the first part of 2014, books you have to read for school or ARC's that come across your threshold, etc.  The TBR Triple Dog Dare is meant to be fun.  So make whatever exceptions you need to make in order to have fun.
Basically, I will stick with books that are in my house or ordered before the end of 2013, and I will allow myself to read any NetGalley books I already have accepted for review or any that I really, really want to add to my list. Mostly I plan to cut down on NetGalley books in that period, but I have three scheduled to read in January 2014.

There are no rules about what you buy in that time frame as long as you wait until after March 31st to read them, but my goal is to buy less books in 2014. So if I can manage it, I won't purchase any books (in hard copy) during that time.

This should be easy for me since I've almost stopped buying books. I bought only two used paperbacks over the last five months. I wonder if the book reading rule applies to downloading ebooks in public domain. I suppose it does. Good luck to you, Tracy!

I won't be signing up for this one, (relief!), good luck with your efforts.

Re Net Galley - there's about 4 books that went up on there yesterday that I like the sound of!

Wow, that's impressive! I could probably get through January on just my TBR but not any more than that.

Tracy - I always like challenges that invite readers to dive into what they already have. It's an effective way I think to get through the TBR list. I'l be looking forward to your reviews.

Good luck with this! I'm determined to use my challenges as a way to get my huge piles of tbr books down next year, even if it kills me. (Hopefully it won't...)

Wow, Prashant, I am impressed. Only two paperbacks in five months. And you have such good access to used books. I definitely plan to do better in 2014, as far as buying books.

Col, this one is more just a goal to keep in mind. I wanted to do it last year but didn't. Yes, NetGalley can be very tempting and I will stay away for a while until I get my January books read and reviewed.

Oh, I could get through 3 years on my TBR but I could never be that disciplined. Don't even want to be that disciplined.

Thanks, Margot. It will be a good exercise.

Thanks, Cath. I am sure you will enjoy getting through piles of TBR books in 2014.

I haven't decided on what my challenge for 2014 will be - this sounds difficult! I'm not sure whether I could resist temptation for a whole three months!

I am not going to even try. I do not want to stop myself from going into bookstores and libraries for the next few months. Much as I want to dent the TBR piles I am not going to give up the pleasure I get from bookstores and libraries. Once in them I equally want the choice of buying and borrowing.

Tracy, my ebooks are more than my physical books and I have enough to last me a few rebirths.

Good luck, Tracy! I really need to figure out a way to tackle my TBR shelves, and a quarterly (or monthly) check-in sounds doable. I find that I really like older books that I've been meaning to read for ages more than a lot of the new stuff I come across on NetGalley, etc.

It is so easy and tempting to amass ebooks, Prashant. I get eyestrain really easily and only lately have I found a reader that works well for me.

Marie, Lately I have bought way too many books so I just have to work hard on not being tempted for those three months.

Bill, Although we do have a wonderful book store nearby with a great, really great, mystery selection, I do a lot of my buying online. Which I will try to resist. For a while.

Rebecca, I have many books I bought years and years ago and haven't read. It is either give up on them or find a motivation to read them. The challenges help.

Good luck in achieving your reading goals next year Tracy! Any challenge addressing that mountainous tbr is worth doing :-)

Keishon, you are right, any help I can get on working on reading my own books is good. I am joining one more challenge re TBR piles, because it is one I have done the last two years and it has a quarterly check-in.
