2014 Global Reading Challenge Wrap Up

The goal of the 2014 Global Reading Challenge is to read one or more fiction books set in each of the seven continents. To make it easier, the Seventh Continent can be Antarctica or a "place" of your choice. It is hosted by Kerrie of MYSTERIES in PARADISE.

This year I opted for the Easy Level, just one book for each continent. In most cases I read more than one book for a continent, but it took me awhile to decide on a book from South America.

These are the books I read for each continent:

Africa: The Cairo Affair by Olen Steinhauer (Egypt)
Asia: Slicky Boys by Martin Limón (South Korea)
Australasia: A Few Right Thinking Men by Sulari Gentil
Europe:  The Collini Case by Ferdinand von Schirach (Germany)
North America:  Sleep While I Sing by L. R. Wright (Canada)
South America:  December Heat by Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza (Brazil)
The Seventh Continent (outer space): The Naked Sun by Isaac Asimov

TracyK: Congratulations! I think you should be proud of finishing the challenge at your chosen level. It is an accomplishment to finish a challenge.

I just realized I never went back to comment on The Collini Case. I really enjoyed the book. I dealt with the challenge of not giving away too much of the plot by writing reviews without and with spoilers.

I do like your inclusion of the seventh continent! Great stuff TracyK - well done.

Tracy, I'm with Sergio on your choice of the Seventh continent — very imaginative. I want to read THE NAKED SUN and some more by Asimov.

Tracy - Nicely done!! And I echo the other comments about your choice for 'the 7th continent.' Truly inspired!

Thanks, Bill. The Collini Case was a very interesting book and I am so glad I got the opportunity to read it this year. I like this challenge because it motivates me to spread my reading around beyond North America and Europe.

As regards challenges, I am really going to have to pick up on the Canadian reading to meet the challenge goals for 2014/2015... and I intend to do that.

Thank you, Sergio. I like Asimov's writing in general, and that series in particular. Now I have to get a copy of the next one in the series.

Prashant, I think you will enjoy any of the Asimov books you choose to read. I hope to read one or two short stories by him also... in 2015.

Thanks, Margot. I like this challenge a lot, but I was concerned about getting my Brazil read done in time. And the Asimov book was very interesting.

Tracy - well done. I think I might hit one of my reading challenges this year, the rest I have extended for another two!
I've a few books in common with you from your reads.........von Schirach, Wright, Garcia-Roza on the piles. Steinhauer read. Limon....mulling over!
Good luck with your 2015 sign-ups.

I've read the von Schirach, the Wright and the Garcia-Roza. Liked them all for different reasons.
I've done the Global Reading Challenge for several years, did the Expert level in 2012 and 2013. But this year I couldn't finish it, couldn't figure out what to read from South America. Got another Garcia-Roza out of the library, which was interesting, but some dust or mold in the book set off my allergies and I couldn't keep reading it. So, for the first time I didn't finish it, but I did read books from the other continents and read three works of historical crime fiction.

Col. I am still mulling over which challenges to join. I want to cut back but they are so attractive. Would work better if I could read twice as many books in a year.

Thanks, Keishon, I enjoy reading books from all over the world, I just wish I could read everything I want to read.

Kathy, I don't know why I had trouble getting to South America this year. I have two authors who write about Brazil and I really like both of them... Leighton Gage and Garcia-Roza. In 2015, I will read at least one book by each of them.
