Our cat Rosie passed away on March 23. She had thyroid disease, had lost a lot of weight, and eventually died of renal failure.
Rosie was with us for 12 years and we think she was about 3 years old when we adopted her. She was a very sweet cat and a good companion and we miss her very much.

Thank you, FictionFan. She did lead a good life until almost the end, and that is a good thing to remember.
I am so sorry you have lost Rosie. Reading your post made me tear up. My little love bug is sleeping beside me as I
write this. She is on medication for her thyroid and is probably about 13 (we adopted her from a shelter.) So I am probably facing the same thing soon.
Rest in peace, Rosie.

Oh, Tracy, I am so very sorry to hear this! Losing a furry family member is so very hard. I feel for all of you and I wish you comfort and peace.
Margot, It has been harder than I expected, and I am still not used to it.
Cats always leave an indelible mark on their owners....each one is special in his/her own way. I have had cats my entire live....(+70) and cannot imagine life without them. I know grief ...I've been there each time I have to part with one of them. Don't stop yourself from getting a "rescue" again...life is too short to live it without cats. Thinking of you at this difficult time:

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this, Tracy. Rosie looks like such a lovely companion, you will miss her very much.
The problem with poets and people is that they are not forever. We can only do our very best for them, accept their company and their love, and truly appreciate the time we have with them. Pets are not forever, but luckily our memories can be. I'm truly sorry for your loss, Tracy.
So sorry about your loss of Rosie, Tracy. She lived a good long life it sounds like, but I know she will be missed. Sweet pictures you shared. Take care.

It seemed so sudden, Jerry. It was a hard loss, but am sure we will find a cat who needs us in a month or so. The cat we had before was so different from Rosie, we don't know what to expect with a new one.
Kay, we were lucky to have Rosie as long as we did, and I hope we have the same luck next time. We have only have four pets (two dogs, two cats, one at a time) since we got married and they all had good long lives.
Lark, Rosie looked sweet and she was loving, and we miss the daily rituals that she had.
Kelly, we do feel lucky to have had Rosie for so long. And you are right, it doesn't take long to get attached to a pet.

Kathy, Rosie did have a good life with us and we were lucky to have her. The only thing she did not like was visits to the vet.

As someone who has kept a number of cats through the decades, their relatively short lifespans are not at all fair, to them nor to us, but worth the bad times for the good, particularly with loving cats, such as our elder cat (about 13yo now) and the street rescue, somewhat traumatized but extremely gregarious younger cat (whom we'd guess is about 5-6yo). Very sorry for your loss, and hers, but glad you had good times together. Not seeing her in her regular spaces will soften with time, most likely.

Todd, I am glad you shared the post about Niki. We have enjoyed having a calico; our previous cat was a tortico but mostly black, very beautiful but more standoffish. Very different personalities.
Indeed...and fur pattern isn't much of an indicator of personality! At least not in my/our experience.
That is so sad! She looks like a very loyal companion. I have been fascinated by calico cats ever since I read Mrs. Coverlet's Detectives as a child where one is stolen from a show.
Constance, It is so sad and we continue to miss her. We hope to find another calico when we look for a cat to adopt, but I am sure that the right cat for us will be there.

Todd, Glen and I were both interested in that article. It was a lot of fun. I guess it is hard to get research for whether a particular coloring also coincides with specific personality traits.
